Kundali matching (guna milan): what the 36 points actually mean
The ashtakoota compatibility score out of 36 that runs every arranged-marriage decision — what the eight kootas measure, what the score misses, and where Mangal dosha fits.
Before most traditional Indian marriages, two charts get scored against each other: guna milan (गुण मिलान) or ashtakoota matching — 36 possible points across eight tests, mostly computed from the two Moons’ nakshatras. Above 18 is considered workable; above 24, strong. Here’s what the points measure.
The eight kootas
| Koota | Points | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual/temperamental class compatibility |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual influence — who leads, who bends |
| Tara | 3 | Health and fortune of the pair (nakshatra distance) |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical/intimate compatibility (animal symbols) |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship between the two Moon-sign lords |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament class — deva, manushya, rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Emotional wavelength + shared fortune (Moon-sign distance) |
| Nadi | 8 | Constitution/health of children — the heaviest koota |
Nadi carries the most weight and the most anxiety: a Nadi dosha (same nadi) is traditionally treated as a serious flag, though classical texts list several cancellations that soften or nullify it.
What the score doesn’t cover
Guna milan is a Moon-based compatibility index — a fast filter, not the whole analysis. A real matching consult also checks:
- Mangal dosha — Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house, traditionally read as friction/volatility in marriage. It matters separately from the score, and it has cancellations too.
- The 7th houses of both charts — what marriage actually looks like for each person — plus the navamsa (D9), the divisional chart that rules married life.
- Dasha alignment — whether both charts’ periods are marriage-friendly around the same window.
- Longevity and health factors — the parts of the tradition people find uncomfortable but that classical matching insists on.
A 32/36 with a manglik mismatch can be worse news than a 22/36 with clean houses. The number is the beginning of the question, not the end.
The modern read
Used well, matching is a structured way to talk about temperament, expectations, and timing before a lifetime commitment. Used lazily — one number, no context — it rejects good matches and blesses bad ones.
TevaPatra’s partner matching runs the full classical stack — kootas, Mangal dosha with its cancellations, 7th-house analysis — and explains why, in your language, instead of just printing a score.
