The 12 houses (bhavas) and what each one governs
Every house in a Vedic chart rules a territory of life — self, wealth, career, marriage, loss. A plain-language tour of all twelve bhavas and what planets do when they land in them.
If the planets are the actors in a Vedic chart, the twelve houses (bhavas) are the stages. Each house governs a territory of life, and a planet sitting in a house acts in that territory. Here’s the whole map, plainly.
The angular houses — the spine of the chart
Houses 1, 4, 7, and 10 are called kendra — the pillars. Planets here are loud and visible in your life.
- 1st (Lagna) — self, body, vitality, first impressions. The ascendant sign lives here; it frames everything.
- 4th — home, mother, property, inner peace, the end of things.
- 7th — marriage, business partners, contracts, the public facing you.
- 10th — career, reputation, authority, karma in the world.
The wealth houses
- 2nd — accumulated money, family, speech, food, early values.
- 11th — gains, income, networks, ambitions fulfilled.
The trikonas — houses of grace
Houses 5 and 9 (with the 1st) form the trikona — the chart’s luckiest trine, tied to dharma and past merit.
- 5th — children, creativity, intelligence, romance, past-life merit (purva punya).
- 9th — fortune, father, teachers, dharma, long journeys, higher learning. The house of grace itself.
The upachayas — effort houses
Houses 3, 6, 10, and 11 are upachaya — “growth” houses that improve with effort and time. (6, 10, and 11 show up in their other groupings too.)
- 3rd — siblings, courage, skills, hustle, short journeys. The house where effort is made.
The dusthanas — the difficult three
Houses 6, 8, and 12 carry the chart’s friction. They’re not “bad” so much as demanding:
- 6th — disease, debts, enemies, competition — but also service and the discipline to overcome all of it.
- 8th — longevity, sudden events, inheritance, occult knowledge, transformation. The house astrologers read most carefully.
- 12th — loss, expenses, foreign lands, isolation — and moksha, liberation, the dissolution of the self.
How to read a house
Three questions, in order: which sign occupies the house, which planets sit there, and where that house’s lord has gone. An empty house isn’t an absence — it’s a quiet room whose landlord lives elsewhere.
When you ask TevaPatra “how’s my career,” this is the machinery answering: 10th house, its lord, the planets inside it, and the dasha period currently switching them on.
