Vimshottari dasha — meaning, and how to read your planetary periods

The Vimshottari dasha system divides your life into planetary periods that colour everything. What each period means, how to read yours, and why timing is the point of Jyotish.

Ask a Vedic astrologer one question — when — and the answer almost always runs through the Vimshottari dasha. It’s the system’s timing engine: a 120-year cycle that divides your life into planetary periods, each coloured by one graha’s nature and its placement in your chart.

The 120-year wheel

Your life is sliced into nine planetary periods, always in the same order:

Graha Period Years
Ketu Ketu dasha 7
Venus Shukra dasha 20
Sun Surya dasha 6
Moon Chandra dasha 10
Mars Mangal dasha 7
Rahu Rahu dasha 18
Jupiter Guru dasha 16
Saturn Shani dasha 19
Mercury Budha dasha 17

Where you start on the wheel is set at birth — by the nakshatra (lunar mansion) your Moon occupies. Two people born days apart can be running completely different periods, which is why “Saturn is in Capricorn this year” means nothing without your dasha.

Mahadasha and antardasha

Each major period (mahadasha) subdivides into sub-periods (antardasha or bhukti) ruled by all nine planets in turn. A Saturn mahadasha with a Venus antardasha reads very differently from Saturn–Mars: the broad chapter theme meets a shorter, sharper sub-theme.

That’s the granularity that makes Jyotish feel eerily specific. “Career grinds through 2026, eases when Jupiter’s sub-period opens in November” is a dasha statement, not a transit guess.

What a period actually does

A dasha doesn’t make things happen so much as activate parts of your chart:

  • The dasha lord’s house placement sets the arena — Jupiter in the 10th tends to write its period in career terms; in the 4th, home and foundations.
  • Its strength and condition — exalted, debilitated, combust, retrograde — shapes whether the period flows or fights.
  • Houses it rules join the story. Venus ruling your 2nd and 7th will bring money and relationship themes into its period regardless of where it sits.

Reading yours

The honest version of “how is this year”: find your current mahadasha and antardasha, look at what those planets own and where they sit, then layer transits on top.

TevaPatra shows this directly — your full Vimshottari timeline with the current period marked, so “what period am I in” is a glance, not a consultation.
