Nakshatras: the 27 lunar mansions and why they matter
Finer than signs, older than houses — the nakshatras divide the zodiac into 27 lunar mansions. Your Moon's nakshatra sets your name-sound, your dasha clock, and half your daily panchanga.
The zodiac’s twelve signs get all the attention, but Jyotish’s older and finer division is the nakshatras — 27 lunar mansions, each spanning 13°20′ of the ecliptic. If signs are the chart’s chapters, nakshatras are the paragraphs.
Why 27?
The Moon crosses the zodiac in roughly 27.3 days — one nakshatra per day. Each has a name, a deity, a symbol, and a temperament: Ashwini the swift healers, Rohini the fertile, Ardra the storm, Moola the root-cutter. Where a sign gives a planet its flavor, a nakshatra gives it a story.
Each nakshatra also splits into four padas (quarters of 3°20′), which is why two people with Moon in the same nakshatra can still read differently.
What your Moon’s nakshatra controls
- Your dasha sequence. The nakshatra holding your Moon at birth sets which Vimshottari period you start in and how far into it you are. The entire 120-year timing wheel hangs off this one point.
- Your name-sound. Traditionally, a child’s name begins with the syllable assigned to the Moon’s nakshatra pada — one reason so many Indian names cluster on particular sounds.
- Compatibility. Classical kundali matching (guna milan) scores mostly off the two Moons’ nakshatras.
Nakshatras in daily life
The panchanga — the Vedic day-quality calendar — includes the day’s nakshatra. Certain nakshatras suit beginnings (Rohini, Pushya), others suit endings or fierce work (Moola, Ardra). When a muhurta picks a “good time” to start something, the nakshatra is the first filter.
Reading yours
Your Moon’s nakshatra is the single most personal point in the chart — more specific than a Moon sign, and the seed of your whole timing system. TevaPatra shows it on your chart detail sheet along with the pada, the deity, and where it places you in your dasha sequence — because “Moon in Taurus” is only ever half the sentence.
