What is Vedic astrology (Jyotish)? A beginner's guide

Jyotish — 'the science of light' — is the astrological tradition of India: sidereal charts, lunar mansions, and a timing system built on planetary periods. Here's what makes it different.

Vedic astrology — Jyotish (ज्योतिष), “the science of light” — is the astrological tradition that grew out of the Indian subcontinent. If you’ve only ever seen Western sun-sign horoscopes, Jyotish will feel like a different discipline entirely. In some ways it is.

The same sky, a different frame

The headline technical difference: Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac — the actual constellations — while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac anchored to the seasons. The two have drifted about 24° apart over the centuries (the ayanamsha). So your Western “Sun sign” and your Vedic Sun sign are often different — not because one is wrong, but because they’re measuring against different frames.

What Jyotish is built from

  • Nine grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, plus the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Nine is the whole cast — no Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto.
  • Twelve houses (bhavas) — the areas of life: self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, partnership, longevity, fortune, career, gains, loss.
  • Twenty-seven nakshatras — lunar mansions finer than signs; the Moon’s nakshatra anchors your whole timing system.
  • Dashas — planetary periods that sequence your life (Vimshottari is the standard). Jyotish is fundamentally about timing, not just personality.

What it’s for

Classically, Jyotish answers two kinds of questions: what karmic promises was I born carrying (the birth chart) and when do they unfold (dashas, transits, muhurta — choosing auspicious timing). Career, marriage, health, property, spiritual direction — the tradition treats the chart as a map of karmic patterns, not a personality quiz.

The honest caveat

A real reading requires an actual computed chart and someone (or something) that knows the rules. That’s the bar we’ve built TevaPatra to meet — and the rest of this blog will unpack the pieces, one concept at a time.
