Why the name TevaPatra

Teva + patra: fate and the document that records it. The name is the whole product thesis in two Sanskrit-rooted words.

People ask about the name. It’s two words with old roots — and it turns out to be the entire product thesis in one word.

Teva — टेवा

In North Indian usage, a teva (टेवा) is a horoscope — the abbreviated birth chart drawn up when a child is born, recording where the planets stood. Families have kept tevas for generations: pulled out before marriages, consulted before beginnings.

The word itself travels further back. Teva comes from the Sanskrit daiva (दैव) — fate, destiny, “that which comes from the gods” — itself derived from deva (देव), the divine. Over centuries, through Prakrit and the ordinary wear of spoken language, daiva softened into teva — and the word for fate became the word for the chart that maps it.

One clarification worth making, because “fate” gets misunderstood: daiva in the tradition is not a fixed decree. Your karma — what you do — is what writes into it. The chart shows the hand you were dealt; how it’s played is still yours. That’s a deeper question than a name-post can hold — we wrote the karma vs. daiva essay separately.

What’s safe to say here: in Hindi, the document and the destiny already share a word.

Patra — पत्र

Patra (पत्र) is the document — the leaf, the letter, the written record. Same word as in janmapatri (जन्मपत्री), the folded birth record a family keeps for a lifetime; same word as the lagna-patra exchanged between families before a wedding, carrying the chosen muhurta.

Patra is what makes fate legible — the chart written down, kept, consulted.

Together

TevaPatra = the fate-document. Your teva, as a patra.

Which is the product in miniature: the chart the tradition would have drawn by hand — planetary positions, dasha timelines, all of it — computed precisely and put in your hands, in your language, whenever you need to read it. The word for the chart and the word for the record of it, joined.
